Simon Wald-Lasowski makes colorful, fun, twisted work by use of bricolage, word play and ‘cliché bending’. Lighthearted at first sight, his images often reveal a certain depth on second inspection. His approach is always very personal, which blur the boundaries between autonomous and commissioned work.

Photo series
In collaboration with:
Freddie Tratlehner
Client: Vice magazine
2013

Vice teamed me up with artist/musician Freddie "Vieze Fur" Tratlehner from the Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig to come up with a new photo series.

We decided to use climbing grips to 'paint' colorful splashes on our faces. We printed our portraits 4 meters high. A very megalomanic project!

The idea was to play with scale. Taken out of the context of the climbing wall most people think these images are digitally manipulated. But once again, as in most of my projects, the special effects all happen in camera. We didn't want to give the mystery too easily away, and therefore decided to keep the images without a climber.
